Overview
Most of the analytics features Localytics offers have the same basic setup and workflow for analyzing your data. In this section, we’ll talk about how most of our analytics reports are set up, as well and discussing some tools you can use to analyze your data.
There are a number of tools in Localytics that can help you customize, structure, and get the most value from your analytics reports.
The image below gives you a high-level view of all the ways you can manipulate data in most Localytics analytics reports. Below that you’ll see a chart of all of the features offered and a quick description of how those features can be used.
Analytics Reporting Features
Below you'll find a list of all of the features available to you on most analytics reports. This chart is intended for a quick overview of each feature. Some features are further explained below.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
App Selector | Reports in Localytics are app-specific. The app selector in the upper-left hand corner allows you to navigate between different apps. |
Filters | You can limit reports to only show a subset of data with a filter. You can filter reports using Dimensions, Custom Dimensions, or Segments. When viewing an Event-powered report, you can also filter using Event Attributes. |
Date Range | Use the date range selector to specify what period of time you want to see in your report. Keep in mind that although Localytics saves the last three years worth of data, you can only visualize up to 396 days at one time. |
Summary Statistics | Most reports include summary statistics above or below the chart that give you a quick overview of the data. Some reports also include percentages that show the period-over-period change in the summary statistics. |
Split | Splitting allows you to compare subsets of the data in a report. For example, you could split a report by country to see if users from different countries behave differently in your app. |
Column | The column dropdown allows you to select how the data is grouped in the report. It determines what unit is shown on the X-Axis of the chart (or what's in the first column if you are viewing the report as a table). |
Metric | Use this dropdown to specify what metric is shown in your report. The metric is the unit shown on the Y-Axis of the chart (or what unit is in the cells of the table if you're viewing the report in tabular format). |
Chart/Table | Most reports can present data as either a chart or as a table. To change the way a report is displayed, click the View button. |
Save/Export | Most reports can be exported in CSV or PDF format. Reports can also be added to Custom Dashboards or you can configure Localytics to email a specific report to you on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. All of this can be done by clicking on the Save button to the right above the chart/table. Keep in mind that reports with summary statistics have two Save buttons, one for the full report, another for the summary statistics. |
Report Annotations | If you are viewing a report with a date on the X-axis, you can add annotations to the report by clicking on the dots seen below each date. Use annotations to provide details that can help inform your reporting (e.g. "Version 3 released"). |
Filtering Data
As mentioned above, you can filter the data in your reports in a number of different ways. Start by selecting Filters at the top of the report you want to filter.
First select the Dimension by which you want to filter your data by selecting (choose dimension) from the dropdown menu. For example, if you want to filter your data to view weekends only, select Where Day of the week is one of Saturday Sunday. Don’t forget to hit Apply to apply the filter.
You can add up to 5 different dimensions for filtering data.
Join this filter to Profiles data by selecting the And option. Alternatively, if you want data to fulfill either filter, click the And option to toggle it to Or.
You can also filter your data by Profile. Profile attributes are customizable—but a few of them are available out of the box with Localytics. To learn more about Profile Attributes, check out our article.
Select the Attribute you want to filter by from the drop-down menu. For example, if you wanted to filter by only your US users (as associated with their Profile) you could filter By Profile People where Last country is one of United States. Don’t forget to hit Apply to view your data.
Like Dimensions, you can add up to 5 different Profile values to filter.
Date Range
To view your data within a specific date range, simply select the dates at the top of the page. This will offer you an option to select the date range you’d like to view your data from. Select custom dates from the calendars shown, or select one of the pre-defined ranges:
- Today
- Yesterday
- Last 7 days
- Last 30 days
- Last 60 days
- Last 90 days
- Last 365 days
Localytics retains data accessible from the dashboard for up to a year—so you can view more data and make better decisions moving forward.
Splitting Data
On some charts within Localytics, you’ll be able to Split the data by different metrics. If this is the case for a chart you’re viewing, you’ll see an option to Add Split to the data.
Click this option and select the metric by which you want to split the data. For example, if you wanted to see which types of devices your users were using to access your app, you could Split the data by Device.
Choose Shortcut
You might see an option to Choose Shortcut for viewing the data as well. This is a quick option for you view the data under different metrics. Instead of selecting manually Users by Country you could select Shortcuts > Country to view the data more quickly. Shortcuts surface the most common metrics and splits.
Keep in mind, these Shortcuts will vary based on which analytics report you're viewing.
View
The View option allows you to change the way the data is being displayed. The default option is Chart, which displays the data in a graph form. Table breaks down the data in a more numeral way in case you prefer viewing the data in more of a spreadsheet format.
Save
You can also Save any of the data within Localytics. The Save option allows you to access different ways of exporting and saving your data. Those options are:
- Export to CSV
- This provides the Table view format of the data so you can see it in a spreadsheet manner.
- Export to PDF
- This provides the Chart view format so you can pass the chart results along to others who may not have access to the Localytics dashboard.
- Schedule Emails
- This feature allows you to send out a scheduled email to people and provide the chart that is shown in the Engagement tool.
- Add to Dashboard
- This allows you to bring the Engagement report that was created and be saved in a custom dashboard report which is found in your My Dashboards section of the Localytics dashboard.
